In the example, we use our software Mailcoach,
but most UUCP gateways works similar..
- Mailcoach is installed in the local network, preferable in a Network server, but a
workstation will do fine.
- Mailcoach is set to dial with suitable intervals, maybe 6-8 times aday.
- Each employee on this company may have his own Mail software, this can be any POP3
complient software such as Netscape or MS Internet Explorer. When you send or recieve
E-mail with this software - Mailcoach is the remote part. Mailcoach buffers outgoing mail
for later transmission.
- When Mailcoach dial, it connect via a ISP (Internet Service Provider) and connects
to our UUCP.
- I first sends all qued mail to our UUCP, then it recieves any waiting mail for your
domain from our UUCP
- When Mailcoach is done with the transfer, all recieved mail is sorted to individual
mailboxes.
- When the user fetches mail (or the mailsoftware does it automatically) it simply
retrieves mail from Mailcoach Mailboxes.
Compared to having your employees using one modem each, dialing up the ISP on at a time
- the UUCP method is much more efficient - and cheaper. Other benefits are for example
when sending large attachments - These will get sent from the individual user fast,
and Mailcoach does the boring long transfer to the ISP..
NOTE! Mail between workstations doesn't need to be transported to the ISP first, they
will get sorted right away!.
